Event: Hands-on Training in Patent Search and Filing

To stimulate knowledge dispersion on Intellectual Property (IP) in the Chandigarh region, specifically with regard to Patents, a hands-on ‘Patent Search and Filing’ Workshop was organized by IP-Chair, Panjab University, in association with DST-Centre for Policy Research (DST-CPR) and Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) on September 29, 2019 in Panjab University, Chandigarh. The event received an overwhelming response from the region, with over 350 applicants (students, research scholars, Post-Doctoral, scientists and faculty members) against the 30 proposed seats. Prof. Rupinder Tewari (IP-Chair, PU, Chd. and Coordinator, DST-CPR at PU, Chd.), introduced the theme for the day and underlined the relevance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in the present day competitive environment, where the mainstay lies on delivering innovations to the society. The workshop was conducted by IP experts, Ms. Divya Kaushik (Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh), Ms. Sangeeta Poddar (Registered Patent Agent), and ably supported by Ms. Mamta Bhardwaj (Scientist C, DST-CPR at PU, Chd.) and Ms. Amandeep Sandhu (Scientific Officer, DST-CPR at PU, Chd.).

The forenoon session was steered by Ms. Divya Kaushik and Ms. Sangeeta Poddar. Ms. Kaushik, introduced the participants to various forms of IPRs (patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, geographical indications, etc.) existing in India and dwelled upon various employment opportunities for the young minds. Ms. Sangeeta Poddar, apprised the participants of the importance of patent filing and patent maintenance. She also imparted a three hour practical training on the same to the participants. The afternoon session provided participants with a practical training on various national and international patent search engines such as InPASS, ESpacenet, Patent Scope and USPTO. This session was conducted by Ms. Mamta Bhardwaj and Ms. Amandeep Sandhu.
