As part of the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM), launched by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India in 2021, the DST-Centre for Policy Research (CPR) and the Department of Biotechnology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised a national seminar on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). The National seminar was conceived as part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav‘ with the aim of increasing IP awareness amongst the faculty, research experts, and students of Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prof. Y P Verma, Registrar, PU, Chd, presided over the opening remarks and emphasised the economic and intellectual significance of IP for young researchers and students. The seminar was led by Mr. Shailendra Singh, Examiner of Patents and Designs, Indian Patent Office, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, New Delhi, as a resource person. Mr. Singh, who is affiliated with the NIPAM mission, defended the value of intellectual property in the contemporary era and its existence in nearly every sphere of life. He shared with young students how innovations can lead to IP value and how students can file IPs and solve society’s problems. Prof. Kashmir Singh, Coordinator, DST-CPR, and Prof. D D Singh, Chairperson, Department of Biotechnology, Punjab University, Chd., urged students to investigate intellectual property when doing research and academic projects.

Descriptive meeting between Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Sr. Advisor & Head STIP Secretariat and Policy Coordination and Programme Management (PCPM) Division, DST and Prof. Raj Kumar , Vice Chancellor of Panjab University (PU) held on 29 July, 2022 to discuss the way forward for DST-CPR, PU at PU & the future S&T collaborations.

A ‘ Roundtable meet ’ took place at DST, New Delhi, India chaired by Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Sr. Advisor & Head STIP Secretariat and Policy Coordination and Programme Management (PCPM) Division, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi on 08 June, 2022. DST-CPR, PU team led by Prof. Kashmir Singh, Coordinator, DST-CPR, PU appraise the activities of the center to Dr. Akhilesh Gupta and officials of DST, GOI. Recommendations were received from the chaired committee as well as from the STI fellows of DST, GoI for strengthening the role of DST-CPR, PU at National, Regional and Local level to achieve S&T goals. A need for interventions in National IPR policy was highlighted in the meeting. (more…)

 A fruitful conversation and discussion on the current ecosystem of IP in India and what measures need to be taken to strengthen it in the academic sector took place. The special address was delivered by Mr. John Cabeca, United States Intellectual Property Counselor for South Asia, United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) , US embassy , Delhi and Dr. Dinesh Sharma, Sr. IP Policy Advisor – India, USPTO, US Embassy, Delhi, who Spoke on the topic “Importance of Patents and their Quality for Innovation.”
