DST-Centre for Policy Research (CPR), Panjab University (PU) in collaboration with Innovation-Technology Transfer Office (i-TTO), Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer, IIT-Delhi, organised a one-day workshop on “Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer” with an aim to highlight the important role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in academic innovation and commercialisation. Prof. Kashmir Singh, Coordinator, DST-CPR, PU welcomed all the dignitaries and highlighted the initiatives of the DST-CPR, PU and highlighted the importance of patentability assessment, IP management for startups and researchers, and effective technology transfer methods. As well as making impactful deliberations in accordance with global standards. The keynote address was delivered by the chief guest of the event Prof. Amlan Bhushan from the University of Oxford, highlighted the global perspectives on innovation policy. He discussed innovation as definition by pursue which doesn’t require gatekeeper to led an important research. He mentioned that innovation should not be meant to duplicate. It should be an original piece that should make a mark and used for society by keeping inclusive and economic outcome at the core. Which requires regulatory frameworks with flexibility to reform at the same time. The distinguished guests Dr. Dapinder Kaur Bakshi (Punjab State Council S&T) and Dr. Indrani Ghosh (Prinicipal Scientific Officer, CSIR) grace the event. Dr. Dapinder Kaur Bakshi (Joint Director, PSCST) mentioned the domain IP a global dialogue. She encouraged the participants to protect its innovation and revenue generated out of it. She informed that IP domain is spreading and it is not only meant to protect the research but to accelerate the vision of make in India. She highlighted that India is making a steep progress in innovation reaching at 38 spot in innovation where IP from young generation can give an immense push. She brought forward the need to fill the gaps such as coming out of Death Valley, reaching to TRL 6 to increase the revenue from licensing and streamline at the same time. Dr. Indrani Ghosh discussed the key considerations before filing a patent. She encouraged the participants to become vigilant in finding IP in their day to day life and encouraged excel in the domains of patenting, innovation protection, and technology commercialization. The speakers for the event were the team from iTTO, FITT, IIT Delhi were Ms. Rashi Prakash, Ms. Himani Vashisth and Ms. Kajal Prajapati who led the IP clinic in the workshop and elaborated on the procedural steps of patent filing in India and shared valuable perspectives on the mechanisms and impacts of technology transfer, to guide participants from idea generation to IP protection.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between DST-CPR, Panjab University, and i-TTO, FITT, IIT Delhi, to foster collaboration in intellectual property and technology transfer initiatives.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks and a networking tea session, encouraging dialogue among researchers, innovators, and policymakers. Overall, the event successfully promoted a culture of innovation and intellectual property awareness, aligning with the broader objective of enhancing academia-industry linkages and translating research outcomes into societal and economic value. The participants learned practical insights to protect their innovations and turn research results into benefits for society and industry.
