DST-Centre for Policy Research (CPR), Panjab University (PU) in collaboration with Institute Innovation Council (IIC) & Department of Music of PU organised an event to celebrate the World Intellectual Property Day under the ages of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan 2.0 (RUSA 2.0) on the theme “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP” to explore how IP rights and innovation policies empower creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs. The celebration highlighted the contributions of inventors for pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity to make music that brings people together, evokes powerful emotions, drives change, and inspires a more innovative future. Prof. Yajvender Pal Verma, Registrar, PU, Chandigarh, graced the event. He mentioned music as an important connector to link inner strength to the divine. He highlighted the different dimensions of music existing in India that need to be recognized from IP aspects, though copyright has gained importance, other needs to be taken care of as well. Prof. Verma quoted examples of the Vedas and the noble music laureates and motivated the participants to search for music at the regional level and protect it. Mr. Jitin Talwar, Partner – Talwar Advocates, founder – XLSCOUT, and TT Consultant, gave the keynote lecture and brought forward the royalty importance of music coming out of IP. He quoted numerous examples of musicians and the creators through Hindi songs and advertisements. He stressed respecting own creativity and also folks history of Indian music. He stressed the difference between inspiration and attribution. He touched upon the types of IP rights and mentioned that each product is protected by a bunch of IP rights that need to be considered in the adaptation process. He gave insights on copyright infringements and FAIR principles. Mr. Pranit Biswas, Managing Associate at S.S. Rana & Co., New Delhi, introduced participants to various patents through which they can protect various dimensions of the music industry and technology development in this domain. He discussed different personal rights infringements and remedies. Prof. Kashmir Singh, Coordinator, DST-CPR, PU, Chandigarh, highlighted the IP importance not only limited to science, technology, and innovation, but it has strong footprints in other domains also, such as music. Prof. Singh informed the contribution of DST-CPR, PU towards Panjab University for policy and other dimensions. The celebrations witnessed participation from students, researchers, and faculty of PU.
