Panjab University organizes a webinar on ‘Researcher as Communicator for Public Awareness of Science’

 

To spread awareness of the importance of science communication DST – Centre for Policy Research (CPR) at Panjab University, organized a webinar on the theme of “Researcher as Communicator for Public Awareness of Science” on 26th November 2020. The webinar aimed at motivating and guiding the Indian researchers and scholars towards contributing their innovative ideas and technical skills in the global sector of the economy. For stimulating their minds, the keynote speaker, Prof./Dr. Manoj Kumar Patairiya, Head & Adviser of Science & Engineering Research Council, Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India shared his views on science communication with the participants.

Prof. C Nirmala, Coordinator, DST- CPR at Panjab University Chandigarh welcomed the speaker and briefly highlighted the purpose of the webinar and introduced briefly about his contributions and achievements in the field of public service broadcasting, innovative programmes and global level contributions in the area of science communication.

More than 90 participants attended the webinar, including young researchers, students, professors and scientists of the various departments of the university and also from many Higher Education Institutes as well as Research Laboratories situated in and around Chandigarh. Dr. Patairiya highlighted the pre-requisite of scientific temper, communicating science research to the common man and evidence-based reforms over scientific knowledge. This will enable effective communication between the public and researchers. He further added that it will boost up the practical implication of scientific research for community’s upliftment. He also gave a brief introduction about the new policy of DST, GoI namely “Social Scientific Responsibility”, which makes mandatory for a researcher to have effective communication skills to convey its scientific research in the public domain. This will allow having research reforms depending on pre-requisite and need of the community. It will further help in projecting the global value of India.
